First Round Reaches, Lack
of Depth in 2007 NFL Draft
I stand behind the C- from this
summer and it actually may be
high. I look for several things in a
draft. First is quality; do we have
Pro Bowlers in the 2007 NFL draft.
Next is depth; are there several
positions that really have value
into the second day of the NFL
draft. And then I look for value
picks; are teams reaching for need
or selecting the best player
available or getting both in an ideal
scenario. (hello Detroit)
First off, the top ten was a mess.
JaMarcus Russell goes number
one because he is the highest
rated QB, but I had five other
players rated higher. Detroit picks
Calvin Johnson who was the
consensus number one, at number
two even though they drafted all
those receivers high in earlier
NFL drafts. I actually thought this
was a smart move since Mike
Williams and Charles Rogers are
gone and Mike Martz wants to
throw the ball around. Joe
Thomas was rated second on my
board and went third so I like that
pick and it is paying off. Gaines
Adams was a reach because he is
a pass rusher, Levi Brown was
rated no better than the 10th
player on my 2007 NFL draft board
and goes at five. Both reaches,
but this leaves LaRon Landry at six
and this is another really good
pick, so three out of six are
reaches. Next we get Adrian
Peterson, great pick, though RB's
scare me early in the NFL draft.
Now eight and nine were crazy
picks. Jamal Anderson and Ted
Ginn did not belong in the top ten
and Ginn should be below 15.
However, recovery is made by
Houston with Amobi Okoye, one of
my top five values. So half the top
ten are good picks. Not real good
value with all the money you GM's
just spent in the 2007 NFL Draft.
My top five in the 2007 NFL draft
were Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas,
LaRon Landry, Amobi Okoye and
Adrian Peterson, with JaMarcus
Russell falling just below Brady
Quinn. QB's get taken earlier than
they should and Quinn had the
better body of work in college so
put them at six and seven. Next
should be Patrick Willis, who could
have gone sixin this NFL draft to
the Redskins and I would not have
complained. Gaines Adams Levi
Brown and Jamal Anderson are in
here somewhere, but I liked Adam
Carriker better as a DE, he just
does not have the speed rush
credentials.
To me the quality and depth was
not there for the 2007 NFL Draft.
Both the top rated QB's would not
have ranked with previous first
round QB's. Same for the DE's
and the OT's, though Thomas
looks pretty good and Staley could
be a late first round steal. Now, no
elite CB's and OLB's and you see
what I mean about quality. The
depth of the 2007 NFL draft was
solid, so that is why I upped the
grade to a C- overall for this draft.
